Project Aim
The project was funded in 2009/10 by the NWDA and hosted on behalf of the GONW and NHS North West by the GM Public Health Network based at Ashton Leigh and Wigan PCT, under the Direction of Dr Kate Ardern, lead GM DPH for climate change and the environment.
The project focused on strengthening the NHS contribution to climate change and sustainable development, ensuring a wide appreciation of the effects on population health and health inequalities of climate change.
The project looked to establish a network of leads in NHS organisations across the North West, with the aim of ensuring:
• The exchange of best and promising practice
• The raised profile of health and climate change
• The dissemination of latest guidance, research and information
• Development of expertise through training events and workshops arranged on behalf of the North West
Key Achievements in 2009/10
• Dissemination of a Sustainable Development questionnaire that identified NW regional contacts and the creation of an SD Leads Network.
• Increased profile of sustainable development work in the NW Region through presentations and presence?? at events throughout the year including;
o Procuring and Commissioning for Carbon Reduction within the North West Event. This event was aimed at focussing on how, as a procuring organisation, the NHS can begin to influence the 60% carbon being consumed with the NW launch of new procurement tool (P4CR).
• Information dissemination at NW Public Health and Wellbeing Conference, Manchester.
• CLASP Transport and Health Event
• Carbon Metrics Workshop. This half day workshop covered the main areas of the NHS Carbon Footprint: Procurement, Transport and Building Energy Use in order to get a better understanding of the methodology behind the carbon footprint calculations.
• Presentation of Climate Connection outline at national annual UKPHA Conference, Bournemouth.
• Evaluating SD questionnaires and mapping exercise with Hyder Consultants.
Looking forward in 2010/11
The project will continue on a part timely basis consolidating and building on achievements, ensuring continued support to the NW SD Community, circulation of the monthly e-Bulletin across the NW and maintaining this website.
